Act I: Blood and Sand 10 questslevels 1–8

- Survive your first fight (Quick Fight in Expeditions)
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: They paid twelve denarii for you. I have seen goats go for more. Listen well, because I say this once: the sand does not care where you came from - a king and a beggar bleed the same red. Take that rusted gladius from the rack and show me the gods did not waste flesh on you. Win one fight. Then, maybe, I will learn your name.
Kasjar: Alive. Good. Twelve denarii... perhaps Decimus did not overpay after all. Wash the blood off - it is not yours today, but one day it will be.

- Win 3 Quick Fights
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: One victory proves nothing but luck, and luck is a whore who leaves before dawn. The crowd does not remember lucky men - it remembers killers who keep standing. Three more fights. Lose one, and you will be shoveling what the horses leave behind.
Kasjar: Three for three. The other trainers are starting to look over the fence when you fight. Do not smile. Looking is not remembering.

- Complete any work shift
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: You think gladiators live on glory? Glory does not fill a bowl. Every man here earns his bread twice - once on the sand, once off it. The quartermaster needs hands, go. And newbie... men who skip work fight on empty stomachs. I have buried those men.
Kasjar: Coin in your pouch, calluses on your palms. Now you understand the first truth of the ludus: nothing is given. Everything is taken - slowly, with both hands.

- Defeat another gladiator in the Arena
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: Wooden dummies do not bleed, and beasts do not think. Time you faced the only thing in this world that fights back with a plan: another man who wants to live exactly as much as you do. There is a fresh face in the arena rankings. Make him regret climbing them.
Kasjar: You watched his eyes, did you not? That flinch before he swung. Remember it. Every man carries his own death in his habits.

- Buy any item from Varn's Shop
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: That rust-eaten blade of yours belongs in a grave, not in a hand. Varn keeps a stall by the gate - ugly man, uglier prices, but his steel sings true. Buy yourself something that will not snap on the first honest parry. Call it an investment in staying alive.
Kasjar: Better. A gladiator's weapon is the only friend allowed to follow him onto the sand. Feed it, oil it, name it if you must - men have loved worse things. And look - Varn threw in something from the back of the stall. He must like you. Terrifying thought.

- Complete any expedition
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: Rome above wears marble. Rome below wears rot. Something has been dragging beggars into the dark near the grain stores, and the aediles pay good coin to men who ask no questions. Go down, look around, come back breathing. And the smell? First rule of the underworld: it always smells like that.
Kasjar: Rat bites and worse smells - and you came back with both eyes still in your skull. Some men freeze in the dark. You did not. I will make a note of it. The dark will make one too.

- Sit down with Decimus - hear what the lanista wants
Read the dialogue
Decimus: Sit. You know who I am? I own this ludus, which means - for now - I own you. Kasjar says you have iron in you. Kasjar says many things. Here is what I say: fight well, and this house lifts you. Fight poorly, and I sell your contract to the salt mines before your blood dries on the sand. We are going to talk, you and I, about what you want. Men without wants are useless to me.
Decimus: Ambition. Good. Ambition I can invest in. Now get out - and win. Winning is the only rent I charge under this roof.

- Complete 2 stat training sessions
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: Muscle is bought with pain, paid daily, no refunds. I have watched you swing - all fury, no foundation. Get to the training yard. Two full sessions, no shortcuts. When your arms start shaking, that is the iron entering. When they stop shaking - that is when you have become it.
Kasjar: You see? The blade does not complain when it is forged. It simply becomes harder to break. Same principle here. Uglier forge. Here - Decimus authorized a bonus ration. Meat builds what bread cannot.

- Defeat Gnaeus in the pit Boss Gladiator Thrax
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: Tonight this ludus settles a debt. Gnaeus - a freelance butcher who crippled two of our boys last season and laughed about it - has taken a contract at the pit fights. Decimus wants a message delivered, written in the only language Gnaeus reads. You are the quill. Do not come back with clean hands; men like him mistake clean hands for weak ones.
Kasjar: The pits will talk about this for a month. Two boys who will never fight again just watched you balance their ledger. That was worth more than coin. Take the coin anyway - and this. You earned steel with steel.

- Win 5 Arena fights
Read the dialogue
Brutus: See that wall, boy? Every gladiator who ever mattered in this house scratched his name into it - most of them with the same hand that later stopped moving forever. You want yours up there? Five victories in the rankings. Not brawls behind the kitchens. Victories, with the whole yard watching. Then you take this nail from old Brutus, and you write.
Brutus: Scratch it deep. Rain and years eat shallow names. ...Huh. You wrote it smaller than I expected. The dangerous ones always do.
The letter that closes the act
From Kasjar · Your name on the wall
They carved your name into the ludus wall today. I have trained men who died nameless. You are not one of them. Rest. Tomorrow the sand asks for more.
Act II: Shadow of the Senator 12 questslevels 10–20

- Hear the messenger out
Read the dialogue
Messenger: A rider in silk, in this dust? He does not dismount - men like him never do. 'Corvinus Metellus Varro requests the honor of your presence.' Requests. From a slave. When a patrician bends that low to reach you, gladiator, check what he is hiding behind his back. But you will go. We both know you will go.
Messenger: An invitation on real vellum. Kasjar held it upside down and spat. Decimus held it to the light and smiled like a man counting coins that are not minted yet.

- Endure the feast at the villa of Corvinus
Read the dialogue
Corvinus: So the sand-dog enters my garden. Wine? It traveled farther than you did - Chios, before your grandfather was born. Sit. Eat. Look around you: senators, poets, women who could buy your ludus with one earring. They are all here to see YOU, the beast that fights like a thinking man. Enjoy tonight. Tomorrow we speak of a small... arrangement.
Corvinus: You leave the villa with perfume in your nose and a stone in your gut. Nothing in that house was free - not the wine, not the smiles, and least of all the word 'arrangement'.

- Decide: rigged fight or honor?
Read the dialogue
Corvinus: Here is my offer, gladiator, and I make it once. In three weeks you fight Drusus - the Senate watches, fortunes ride on it. Fall in the second hour, and I will fill your hands with more gold than Decimus pays in five years. Refuse... and remember that ships sink, ludi burn, and nobody investigates too hard when a slave disappears. Choose.
Corvinus: Wise decision. The gold is in your account. I'll have more such jobs.
Corvinus: You refuse? Bold. Or foolish. We'll see.
Corvinus studies your face the way a butcher studies a bull. Whatever you chose, his smile never reached his eyes. It never does.

- Gather whispers in the slums (2 expeditions)
Read the dialogue
Decimus: Corvinus made you an offer? Of course he did - he collects gladiators the way boys collect knucklebones. Listen: half the debts in the slums lead back to his moneylenders, and debtors talk when the collectors leave. Go down there. Walk, listen, buy a beggar a meal. I want to know what the gutters know about our generous patrician.
Decimus: So: two ludi burned last year, both after refusing him. Fighters bought quiet-like through middlemen. The slums know Corvinus better than the Senate does. Good work. Bad news.

- Intercept the clerk's route (3 expeditions)
Read the dialogue
Decimus: Whispers hang no one - Rome runs on documents. My contact says Corvinus's clerk travels the old aqueduct road with a strongbox twice a month, tomorrow being one such day. I need what is inside: ledgers, letters, seals. Do not kill anyone important. Do not be seen. And if you are seen - you were never mine.
Decimus: Promissory notes, match-fixing lists, a letter that mentions poison and a name with a praetor's ring. Decimus reads them twice and locks them in the floor. 'Now we own a piece of him too.'

- Have Varn improve an item (blacksmith upgrade)
Read the dialogue
Varn: Word crawls, boy, and my forge hears everything: you have stepped on the toes of a man who buys knives by the dozen. Bring me your best piece of steel. For what comes, you do not need pretty - you need TRUE. True steel turns a blade in the dark. Pretty steel gets buried with you.
Varn: Varn works in silence, which from him is a eulogy. He hands the piece back heavier than it went in. 'No charge for the edge. Consider it a bet that you live.'

- Stand the night watch (complete a work shift)
- Put down the intruder (win a Quick Fight)
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: Tonight nobody sleeps. Decimus has the documents, which means Corvinus has a reason, which means torches in the dark. You take the night shift: walls, gate, granary. And when something comes - because something always comes - you put it down quietly. The boys need their sleep. Dawn belongs to the strong.
Kasjar: One shadow with a knife and a purse full of fresh silver. He will limp home with neither. Kasjar nods once - from him, that is a triumph parade.

- Win 5 ranked Arena fights
Read the dialogue
Brutus: Corvinus spreads coin and lies: says you are glass, says you fold, says Decimus props you up with paid wins. Words are wind - but the provincial arena is a hurricane. Five ranked victories, boy, before the month turns. Make the crowd chant so loud that his dinner guests hear it through the walls.
Brutus: Five fights, five bodies in the sand, and a chant that needed no paying. Brutus scratches something on the wall - not your name this time. A tally. He has started counting.

- Catch the poisoner's watcher (win a Quick Fight)
Read the dialogue
Mira: Do not drink from the amphora tonight. Do not ask how I know - the kitchens talk to those who listen, and I listen for a living. Someone paid a delivery boy to leave a gift in your water. Sweet wine, bitter almonds underneath. Whoever carries almonds in this heat wants a funeral. Find the one who watches to see if you sip.
Mira: The watcher ran, as watchers do, but not fast enough. Mira melts back toward the kitchens before you can thank her. Remember the debt anyway. In this story, she is the only one keeping score honestly.

- Follow the silver through the city (2 expeditions)
- Speak with Kasjar in private
Read the dialogue
Kasjar: It gets worse. The poison boy knew the water schedule - OUR schedule, chalked nowhere, spoken only inside these walls. That means a mouth in this ludus eats from two tables. Walk the city, pull the threads, then come back and we talk quietly, you and I, about who sleeps within arm's reach of us both.
Kasjar: Young Petro. Sixteen, debts, a sick mother, and Corvinus's silver under his cot. Kasjar does not rage - he goes quiet, which is worse. 'The boy leaves tonight. Alive. The debt he owes... Corvinus will collect it from ME, someday, face to face.'

- Break the ambush (win 3 Quick Fights)
Read the dialogue
Decimus: He stops pretending now. Three hired blades on the ludus road this morning - not thugs, professionals: matched swords, military boots, no papers. Corvinus is done buying you and has moved to burying you. They are camped by the crossroads shrine, waiting for dusk. I say we do not wait with them.
Decimus: Professionals bleed like amateurs, they just apologize less. Decimus counts the matched swords now hanging in his office. 'Evidence,' he says. 'And decoration.'

- Face the praetorian centurion Boss Corvinus's Centurion
Read the dialogue
Narrator: It happens fast, the way Rome always strikes: a praetor's seal, a drummed-up charge - 'assault on citizens of standing' - and a centurion with dead eyes sent to drag you to judgment. The ludus gate stands open. Kasjar's hand rests on his gladius. Decimus shakes his head: not here, not like this. The centurion smiles. He has never lost a prisoner. You will be the first to test that record properly.
Narrator: You beat their man bloody in front of the lictors - and it changes nothing, because it was never a trial. 'Guilty. The mines of Ferraria. For life.' Corvinus does not even attend. Winners rarely watch the sentencing.
The letter that closes the act
From Gaius · The verdict
The court read the verdict aloud and for once Rome told the truth. Keep this letter. When they pretend it never happened, and they will, you will have proof that you won.
Gold and experience shown are what the game actually pays (quest rewards are scaled: gold ×3 over the base, experience ×2). Items come pre-forged and equippable at the quest level. Every quest also takes real time: a conversation sends your gladiator away for five minutes, a mission for longer.
